Business Brainstorming

While we’re on the subject of brainstorming, I thought it might prove an instructive exercise to choose a business subject at random as an example and see what you could do to check out any idea that comes to you.

I’ve selected Dry Cleaning as an example. Dry Cleaning? Where does that come from? Well, I attended a wedding last weekend, I needed to wear a jacket and it needed to be dry cleaned. I have one of those kits which enable you to dry clean clothes in the dryer – that is where the idea comes from.

You will have ideas that come out of left field and it is important to keep in mind that you are not allowed eliminating any idea, no matter how silly it seem (i.e. Dry Cleaning). That is one of the basic rules for brainstorming.

Remember, the first thing you want to do is make a list of ideas for a business. Ideally your list should be made up of ideas that are based upon things you know something about. You are not allowed to drop any idea just because it seems silly or impractical when it first occurs to you.

Many great ideas came about as the result of someone thinking about a silly idea when it inspired a random thought about something else, something completely unexpected. Thinking about the unexpected idea led to another idea with the end result being an idea that turned out to be very successful.

This may not happen to you but you need to be aware that any ideas that come to you when you go through this brainstorming process should be added to your list.

Write ideas down as they occur to you. Write in big letters. The best thing to use is an easel. If you don’t have one, use the largest piece of paper you have or write your ideas down on separate pieces of paper.  Stick the paper(s) up on the wall where you can stand back and clearly read each idea.

Tomorrow we’ll go through a process you can use.
